Aesthetics aside…
It seems like the iPad’s keyboard, in landscape mode, leaves you no choice but to hold the device in one hand and hunt-n-peck with the other. What if the keyboard was split into two, and placed in the lower-right and left corners? Then, you could hold it with both hands, and type a la the iPhone.
It’d be a sacrifice to the key size, for sure, but it might be more comfortable and functional.

It is an odd thing. I assume that typing in the keyboard is not for on-the-go standing-up sort of situations and that it’s meant to be for when you’re propped up against a wall or in a chair or anywhere you can prop the device against your legs or in your lap.
Though, judging by the size of the keyboard, which is almost half the screen, we’re looking at a scaled-up keyboard that you can thumb with. Essentially a scaled-up iphone i landscape mode or any thumbing input device (i.e. Blackberry, etc.).
You could put the iPad in your lap. Then you wouldn’t need to hold onto it with one hand. The keyboard is almost the same size as a normal keyboard. If you have problems with touch screen keyboards then you can buy the keyboard dock accessory.
